about

When the space between you and the horizon
has been cinched with thread
and the lattices of the constellations
are piano wire on the sky's throat

when you turn away from the festival
of hordes screaming into a wet pit
and your only company in the wild
is the detail painted into bark

when you announce your death in the paper
but they print your obituary as your name
and your name as your obituary

it's time to play in the orchestra underneath,
where the music doesn't wait for a concert,
because you were always the phantom
and never the opera

*******************************************

This is an album about obsessive love of music. I've been experimenting, for the past few years, with time signatures and more traditional compositional methods, and I wanted to pool all of my practice with these techniques into a sweeping collection which challenged me to live up to the legacies of many timeless musical traditions which have long inspired me (gamelan, microtonal, minimalist, maximalist, etcetera). The result is this album, which is less like some of my typical beat-driven material, and more like the records which I'd normally sample to make those very beats. And yet it uses the same equipment as the beats, comes from the same brain. It's like a satellite taking a picture down the lens of a microscope.
